The American Art-Union (1839-1852) commissioned Charles Cushing Wright, a preeminent American medalist of the 19th century to design several annual medals from 1847-1849.These medallions were made to advance appreciations of the arts and featured great artists of the day. This 1849 medallion of John Trumbull was designed by Robert Ball Hughes after his bust made in 1834. The reverse shows Columbia granting merit to an artist and sculptor. 250 were minted at the Philadelphia Mint in 1849 and another 250 in 1850.
